A Safe, Supportive, and Therapeutic Day Program for Older Adults

Achieva Health's Adult Day Program provides structured daytime support for older adults who benefit from guided exercise, meaningful activities, supervised engagement, and a warm social environment.

Unlike many day programs that are run primarily by recreational staff, Achieva's program is built on a Restorative Care model and supported by regulated health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, kinesiologists, speech-language pathologists, and trained support personnel. This allows us to focus not only on enjoyment, but on maintaining and improving function, confidence, and independence.

Education on Safe Walking & Mobility Devices

Proper use of mobility devices is essential for preventing falls. As part of our Adult Day Program, we provide education to participants, families, and staff on how to walk safely and use canes, walkers, and wheelchairs correctly.

  • Selecting the right mobility device for each person
  • Ensuring proper height and fit (e.g., cane or walker at wrist crease with slight elbow bend)
  • Encouraging upright posture and forward gaze rather than looking down
  • Promoting safe sit-to-stand techniques that do not rely on pulling on the walker
  • Regularly monitoring equipment for wear and tear (brakes, wheels, grips)

Condition-Specific Gait Strategies

Our team incorporates condition-specific gait techniques into programming for participants with conditions like Parkinson's disease, stroke, arthritis, or joint replacement.

  • Rhythmic cueing and wider base of support for Parkinson's-related shuffling gait
  • Strengthening of the affected side and balance practice after stroke
  • Activity pacing, joint protection, and mobility aids to support arthritis
  • Progressive weight-bearing and endurance training after joint replacement
